What Happens After You Pass the Citizenship Test?
19 February 2026
Passing the test is a milestone, not the finish line. Here's what the process generally looks like from there.
Passing the Test Is One Requirement, Not the Whole Application
The citizenship test confirms you meet the knowledge requirement for citizenship, but your overall application still needs to be finalised and approved before citizenship is granted. Passing the test doesn't itself make you a citizen.
Approval and the Citizenship Ceremony
Once your application is approved, you'll be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. This is where citizenship is formally conferred, you make the Pledge of Commitment as an Australian citizen, and you're presented with your citizenship certificate. Timing for the ceremony invitation varies and depends on factors outside the test itself, so it's worth checking current processing guidance from the Department of Home Affairs for what to expect in your situation.
What You'll Need Before the Ceremony
You'll typically need to make arrangements to attend in person, ceremonies are held at set locations and dates. Details of exactly what's required, and any documents to bring, are communicated as part of your approval and invitation.
Until Then
Between passing the test and attending your ceremony, there's nothing further to prepare for on the knowledge side, that part is done. If you're helping a family member or friend prepare for their own test in the meantime, our practice questions and mock test are free to start, no account required to try them.
